Living in Gqeberha means many of us enjoy water sports. Learn about surfer's ear and how to protect your hearing.
Gqeberha's beautiful coastline attracts many surfers and water sport enthusiasts. However, repeated exposure to cold water and wind can lead to exostosis, commonly known as surfer's ear.
## What is Surfer's Ear?
Exostosis is the growth of bone within the ear canal triggered by cold water and wind exposure. These bony growths gradually narrow the ear canal, trapping water and debris.
## Symptoms
- Recurrent ear infections
- Feeling of fullness in the ear
- Water trapped in the ear canal
- Hearing loss
- Increased ear wax buildup
## Prevention is Key
For active water sports participants:
- Wear neoprene hoods or ear plugs
- Rinse ears with fresh water after surfing
- Keep ears dry
- Use protective gear in cold water
## Surgical Treatment
When exostosis significantly narrows the ear canal, surgical removal is recommended. I use minimally invasive techniques that preserve ear canal skin, promoting faster healing and better outcomes. Most patients return to water activities within 4-6 weeks.
If you're experiencing recurrent ear problems and spend time in the water, schedule an evaluation to assess your ear health.
